Thank You!

Thank you for attending our open house last Thursday. It means a lot to the children and teachers when you take time out of your busy schedules to see what the children are doing in class.  We'd also like to thank all the parents that helped out with setting up the liquids for our experiments and for deconstructing our math books. We couldn't do it without our volunteers!

We have a busy week. First we sent home 2 important notices this week. The first notice is about our spelling program, "Words Their Way." Please read the notice carefully. It explains the spelling homework. The only spelling homework that is returned will be the work completed on Wednesday night. Don't hesitate to email, call, or stop by if you have any questions.
The Arthur Read-a-Long was the second notice. Please record your child's reading each night on the read-a-long page. Return the form each Friday so that we can count and turn in the number of books read to Mrs. Moore. Most of the Arthur Books are a level 16 or higher, so read Arthur to your child while they lay back enjoy!

We started our take home readers this week. The students will bring home 1 or more books to read each and every night. The books are just right books that they have practiced in the classroom and should easily be able to read. Reading homework is probably the most important homework the first graders have. Please make sure you complete the blue reading log each night. The books and blue log must be returned signed to the classroom every day. Thank you!

Our Fourth Week!

Monday, September 17, 2012

We have a very busy week this week:
Open house is Thursday, September 20th. You can visit classrooms from 5-6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Please remember food and beverages cannot be brought into the classrooms.

Progress reports will be sent home Friday, September 21st.  This will be the first year your child receives numerical grades. Please remember a numerical grade for an S from kindergarten can run from a 74 to an 89. Write down all your questions for our conferences in October.

Spelling is new for our kids this year. We are starting a program called, "Words Their Way." This was a district adoption which incorporates phonics, word study, and word families as a way to increase reading ability and spelling. Students were given a spelling inventory as an assessment. They were then placed into spelling groups according to the spelling patterns they needed to learn. Once a child works through their word lists for a spelling pattern they move to the next generalization they need to learn. This is a very individualized spelling program. Last week the children practiced sorting and writing words. This week they will practice with words that will be on their spelling test next week. This is the hard part for parents. The students will work with 18-to 25 words that fit the spelling pattern. Their spelling test will be on 12 of the words that the teacher chooses from the list. This strategy teaches the child to learn the spelling pattern rather memorizing a word for a test. Memorized words almost  never appear spelled correctly in daily writing.

Soon we will teach your child how to access Odyssey, a lesson program site the district purchased. Students can assess the site from home. Their sign in is the first five letters of their last name, the first three letters of their first name, then 000 or 001. Their password is their lunch number. (Ex: martiann000) Click on the word Odyssey to access the log in page.

Please continue to read to and with your child for enjoyment, outside of their assigned reading time. The students will have homework in other subject areas, as well as their Monday through Friday reading. Students who are unable to complete their homework the night it is assigned,  will be given extra work time during recess.

Book club orders will be sent home on Monday. The completed order forms will be due back on Friday. Make sure your child's name is on each form. Please write ONE check to Scholastic Book Clubs no matter how many of the clubs you order from. We will soon have the online ordering available for parents.

We understand following the new rules at parent drive can be frustrating, but the rules are truly to keep your children safe and the line moving. You have our heart felt thanks for displaying your last name in the window so we can get the correct kids to the cars quickly. Thank you all for not walking over and trying to pick your kids up from the hardtop.

We look forward to a wonderful year together. Parents and teachers must work together in order for students to be successful. Please email if you have any questions or concerns.
